About the kimonos:

This jacket is a contemporary nod to the 'fashionistas' of a time gone by. During the Asuka and Heian periods, colours indicated the wearer's wealth and social rank. Hierarchy was displayed and determined by specific colours. The most difficult colour to produce was a deep purple - reserved for royalty and strictly prohibited for wear by anyone else. To avoid fines, the bold and fashion-conscious would line their garments with forbidden colours and patterns.
